Does oatly have carcinogenic additives?

Dear all,
For some years now, the app ‘Yuka’ has become very trendy.

Yuka established a database that contains 3 million food products and 2 million cosmetic products. The purpose of this app is to display the additives, nutritional values and organic aspect of a product by scanning its barcode.

However, when scanning Oatly barista edition, we can see that Oatly contains Dipotassium phosphate (E340ii) in excess.

Excess phosphorus can disrupt bone mineralization, damage the kidnets, and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and breast cancer.

My question to oatly is, can they cut out this additive, such that my daily consumption of this oat milk does not increase my risk of cancer etc?

(Scanning oatly's organic oat milk, we can see that the additive E340ii is omitted, I am aware. But the delicious, creamy flavour of the barista edition is indispensable!)

Kind regards.

Hi Olivia,

Thanks for reaching oat!

We’ve made oat drink for over 30 years and please know we have no interest in offering something harmful to people's health. Our aim as a company is to offer an alternative to cow’s milk that is easily swapped in your daily life – such as Barista in your morning coffee!

Phosphorus is a naturally occurring mineral found in soil and in different foods like dairy and meat, and also in smaller amounts in many plant-based foods including oats. We’re adding dipotassium phosphate to make our products work in coffee, and it’s an approved additive used in quite many food products. As always, it’s the diet as a whole that decides whether you’re getting too much or too little of a specific nutrient and not one single product. Just as you mentioned, we do have oat drinks without added dipotassium phosphate and the options vary a bit depending on where you’re located.

You can read more on the topic here and feel free to reach out again if you have more questions!

All the best,

Jeanna at Oatly
