How long is oat milk ok out the fridge

Hi Oatly Team,

so our son is dairy free and drinks whole oatly by the gallon. He still wakes in the night for it and it’s a bit of a ball ache going down to the fridge, filling a bottle, warming it up and trudging back up to his room in the middle of the night. Would your milk be ok if I took a bottle up at say 10pm, kept it on my bedside table and then give it to him at room temp at 2am?

thanks in advance from a semi sleep deprived parent trying to find a way to cut down her time out of bed x

Hi Natasha,

I hope that you are hanging in there with this challenging sleep schedule! We don't add any preservatives to our oatmilk recipes, so we generally advise keeping our oatmilk refrigerated continuously for food safety purposes. (Personally, I would not consume oatmilk that has been sitting out for more than four hours.)

I hope this answer is somewhat helpful! If we can send a nice care package for you to enjoy during this season of your life, just send an email over to our US team at info.us@oatly.com. They would love to send some gifts your way.

Could you put it in a flask instead ?

That's a good idea! Together with a freezer pack would likely work too.

Ahh I stumbled upon this post whilst also attempting to find a way to take our oat milk upstairs for little one during the night! We have a waker here too and I feel your pain!

But I was taken back by the loveliness of the lady that answered the question and just wanted to say how lovely!!

I'll be off to look at Oatly now as we are always looking for a lovely brand.

Hi there, I didn’t realise my oatly barista milk needed to be refrigerated (every other brand I have got is long life, so I store in a cupboard!). 6 days later I’ve realised the 4 bottles I put away in the cupboard say ‘keep cold!’. They are unopened bottles, will they still be ok? I have now put them all in the fridge in the hope that the answer is yes!!!

Hello Laura,

Great to hear from you!

All of our cartons with flat tops are shelf-stable and can be stored in room temperature before opening, compared to the ones with pointy tops that need to be refrigerated at all times.

Let us know if you have any further questions.

All the best,

What is the difference between the “must be refrigerated” pointy topped ones and the “okay to store at room temp” flat tops?

I just finished a long road trip during which an UNOPENED container of regular (full fat) was in a cooler but not cold the whole time. It never got hot. Is it okay to stick in the fridge and use?

Hey Alex,

We're honored you brought us along for the road trip!

Good questions. Our chilled (gable-peak top) cartons require constant refrigeration, whereas, our shelf-stable (flat top) cartons only need to be refrigerated once they've been opened for the first time. That being said, we also generally recommend that you continue to store our cartons however you found them at the store. So, if a shelf-stable carton was in the fridge, we recommend you keep it that way to ensure the best quality. The best way to tell if a carton has gone bad is by an off spoiled smell.

If you have any other questions, just holler.
