Use of Oil in the ingredients

Hi there, I have been a great fan of Oatly and a regular user of Oatly Organic.

I find that all the products except Oatly Organic Milk, have some form of Oil used in it. I suppose it is to create thickness or a bind or something. But you managed to do without it for the Oatly Organic. Then why do you have Oil used in other products. Can you atleast create a variant with and without Oil ?

Also curious of what is the percentage of Oil in the composition ? We see Oil mentioned in the ingredients but no indication of the proportion.

Thanks again for the fine product and look forward to your response on the Oil usage.

Cheers,

Sravan

Hey there Sravan,

Thanks a bunch for getting in touch and for being such a loyal oat fan! I’m more than happy to answer your questions and give you some insight into the oil we use in our drinks.

Way back in the early 90s, when scientists began developing our original oat drink recipe, their goal was to create a product that was nutritionally and functionally comparable to cow’s milk, in order to encourage a shift away from dairy. After testing and exploring various plant-based options, they settled on rapeseed oil (the low-erucic acid kind). It’s actually one of the healthiest oils available, with more unsaturated fats and less saturated fats than most other plant-based oils, and also has a good proportion of omega 3’s.

By the sounds of it you use our Oat Drink Organic for most things, and if it works for you and aligns with your preference for organic products, then that’s a win in our eyes! However, some people find that our organic drinks aren’t as creamy or foamable, and they don’t perform as well in coffee and tea. Since oat fans have different tastes and preferences, we won't be making our whole product line organic, as we need to accommodate everyone. I hope that makes sense, but please let me know if you’d like me to clarify anything further?

The amount of rapeseed oil used varies depending on the specific product and its intended flavour and performance. To find out the exact amount of oil in each product, all you need to do is check the “Fat” measurement on the nutrition label.

If you're interested in finding out more about rapeseed oil, we have an oat-tastic article on the subject that you can read here

Oats of love,
